Mysterious Al | Artist

Mysterious Al is a contemporary artist from London, UK. He rose to fame in the early 2000’s through the explosion of street art, developing a notoriety for his wall paintings, paste ups and street installations alongside his contemporaries D*face, Banksy and Shantel Martin.

Al’s work has changed dramatically from his early beginnings. Since moving to Australia in 2011, his paintings have been influenced by ancient tribal masks, and reference indigenous patterns and mark making as well as the bright colours of urban art and street advertising.

His work is striking and at first glance intimidating. But look closer and you’ll see fragility, vulnerability and pieces that poke fun at man’s psyche and fragile sense of self. Mysterious Al has shown extensively at galleries and art fairs worldwide. He has collaborated with major brands such as Levis, Vans, Carhartt, Adidas and Tommy Hilfiger on various ranges of cobranded apparel.

In 2019 Mysterious Al presented ‘Blinking into the sunlight’ a walkthrough interactive art experience in a condemned warehouse in Collingwood. The show attracted 1300+ visitors over a single weekend and garnered rave reviews from The Age, Broadsheet and The Urban List.

In 2020 Mysterious Al partnered with Tommy Hilfiger for a micro capsule collection of short and long sleeved tshirts and a hoodie. The collection was gender neutral, and made from 100 percent organic or recycled cotton. It sold out online in two days.

In 2021 Mysterious Al presented ‘SPOOKHOUSE’; a world first concept art exhibition set inside a working fairground ghost train. ‘SPOOKHOUSE’ attracted nearly 5,000 visitors and garnered rave reviews from The Age, Broadsheet and The Urban List.

“Although there’s a lot of spontaneity and energy in my work, I draw reference from a rich history of method and colour. I like the practice of taking shapes and marks that are created spontaneously and wrangling them into line. Making order out of chaos” Mysterious al
